In the 1980s and 1990s, the streets of Madrid served as the scene in which activists organized, people used and distributed needles, and where community health organizers reached out to marginalized communities. Join Dr. Louie Dean Valencia as he shows some of the ways in which people fought for their lives and communities during the HIV/AIDS crisis.

Dr. Louie Dean Valencia studies the intersections of countercultures, community formation, youth and queer culture, democratic institutions, and technology. He has been a Lecturer on History and Literature at Harvard University, has served the Research Committee of EuropeNow, and was co-chair of the Council for European Studies’ Critical European Studies Research Network. He is the author of Antiauthoritarian Youth Culture in Francoist Spain: Clashing with Fascism (Bloomsbury Academic, 2018) and the editor of Far-Right Revisionism and the End of History: Alt/Histories (Routledge, 2020). His work has appeared in numerous journals and edited volumes. He has received fellowships and grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the United States Library of Congress, American Council of Learned Societies, and the Spanish Ministry of Education, amongst others.

Cosponsored by the NYU Department of Spanish and Portuguese, and the NYU King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center.
